VOLUME OF TRAFFIC FOR DISTRESS AND SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS

1. At its fifty-fourth session the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 54/23, paragraphs 5.1.28- 5.1.30) noted the results of a Meeting of Experts on Funding of International Distress and Safety Satellite Communications convened by INMARSAT from 6 to 9 April 1987 (MSC 54/INF.10) to provide a suitable international forum for Governments to exchange views on how distress and safety satellite communication systems could be funded by the international community in equitable way.
2. The Committee, noting that it had been invited by the INMARSAT Meeting to assist in collecting information on the existing and anticipated volume of traffic for distress and safety communications which will be used as a basis for defining costs of these communications and possible methods of financing at future meetings instructed the Secretariat to prepare, in connection with the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Radiocommunications and on the basis of MSC 54/INF .10, annexes VI and VIII, a questionnaire for circulation to Member Governments requesting them to provide such information, which, when received should be brought to the attention of the Sub-Committee on Radiocommunications and INMARSAT .
3. Taking into account the above, Member Governments are invited to provide information on their actual and anticipated annual volume of distress and safety traffic in accordance with the questionnaire attached at annex.
