RECOMMENDATION ON THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF VHF CHANNEL 70(156.525 MHz) FOR DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING
 

1. At its forty-ninth session the Maritime Safety Committee approved (MSC 49/19, paragraph 4.4 and Annex 3) a draft circular on the exclusive use of VHF Channel 70 for digital selective calling which is attached to this circular.

2. Member Governments are invited to take appropriate measures to prohibit the use of this channel for purposes other than digital selective calling as soon as practicable and in any case not later than 31 December 1985.

 
Annex
CIRCULAR ON THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF VHF CHANNEL 70 (156.525 MHz) FOR DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING
 
1. At the World Administrative Radio Conference for the Mobile Services, Geneva 1983, the following note was added to Channel 70 of the revised Appendix 18 of the Radio Regulations:
"This channel is to be used exclusively for digital selective calling for distress and safety purposes as from 1 January 1986 (see Resolution No.317(Mob 83"; unti131 December 1985 it may be used as an intership channel with order of priority 13 (see note a))."
2. The Conference adopted Resolution No.317(Mob-83) which resolves: " as soon as practicable, but not later than 1 January 1986, the frequency 156.525 MHz shall be used exclusively for distress and safety purposes using digital selective calling."
3. Taking into account the importance of providing a reliable digital selective calling function in the future distress and safety system, Member Governments are invited to take appropriate measures to prohibit the use of VHF channel 70 (156.525 MHz) for purposes other than digital selective calling as soon as is practicable and in any case not later than 31 December 1985.
